The 5th Florida Magic History & Collector's Conference in Orlando was packed with excitement and inspiration. Captivating lectures, enchanting demonstrations and thrilling performances made for a fantastic opportunity for anyone who loves magic. In describing some of the memorable moments, I hope to give you a flavor of this truly unusual event, that combines the best traditions of a magic convention with the added depth of a collector and historians' gathering.

Remarkable Lectures

Central to the festivities was a series of engaging lectures presented by renowned magicians and historians. These sessions fell into three general categories: insightful history lectures, personal tributes, and interactive demonstrations.

The more traditional historical lectures provided insights into the lives of legendary magicians, like Bill Winter's fascinating review of the work of Walter Gibson.

Presenters Dan Stapleton and Don Greenberg provided deeply moving tributes to figures with whom they were personally acquainted, namely Celeste Evans and Del Ray. Professor Schreibman offered an amazing presentation of the genius of Lubor Fielder, with some hands-on demonstration of many of his original creations. Dennis Phllips "History of the Asrah" provided an up close exploration of the props of this legendary effect.

Showtime

ree

Led by conference ringmaster Dan Stapleton and his partner Ray Eden, the shows offered remarkable illusions and memorable performances. Kevin Bellucci (who won the rather large trophy) produced doves, a Jacobin pigeon and a Pomeranian (try competing with that!) Meanwhile, Larry Kahlow and Jennifer Kahlow charmed the crowd with their extraordinary presentation of the Cake in Hat illusion, something often read about but rarely seen. The shows were astonishing and fun!

Dealer's Room, Flea Market and Auction

ree

Around tables covered with free vintage magazines and posters, deals galore dominated

the dealers room and flea market. These ranged from unusual pocket effects to a Zig-Zag built by Jack Hughes, and everything in between. My friends Andrew and Jessica from the Tennessee Magic Emporium offered a fine selection of rare books; others had props, collectibles, ephemera and more. The auction featured rare items including pieces from the La Grande David troupe and beautiful vintage stage pieces by Abbotts, many of which sold for low two-digit figures (yes, I meant two-digit!)

The Tannen's vs. Abbott's Throwdown

ree

An unusual first night event included participants bringing their favorite piece of

equipment from Abbott's and Tannen's. Though designed as a fun competition, it soon morphed into a loving tribute to these stellar institutions, combining demonstrations and storytelling. And, as an added bonus, one participant showed off one of the most remarkable balloon levitation devises I've ever seen.

Engaging Interactions

ree

One of the greatest rewards from the Florida Magic History Conference was the chance to

engage its esteemed yet amiable attendees. The gathering included legendary magicians, noted historians and passionate collectors, creating a wonderful melting pot of talent and enthusiasm. At various times, you would find yourself grabbing a drink or having a chat with the likes of Rick "the Magician with a Paintbrush" Heath of the La Grand David troupe, magician/collector Dr. Mark Horowitz, or Adrienne Tennant, host of the Magic Book Podcast. These encounters rendered the event superlative.

The Pop-Up Giant Poster Gallery

ree

Dan Stapleton surprised everyone by leading a team to hang more than a dozen, original multi-sheet vintage posters. They were breathtaking (and not just for the folks who undertook the task of unloading, unrolling, hanging and arranging these gargantuan pieces. This gallery quickly became the physical center of the conference.

More Excitement in 2027!

If you missed the conference, know that The 6th Florida Magic History & Collector's Conference will be set for February 2027.
